What is PTFE?

Most consumers are familiar with sealing components such as oil seals, O-rings and packings. However, with increasingly difficult application requirements these products and materials are not able to perform as they once did. Seals made from PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) have therefore become one of the most popular sealing solutions for all industries.

Seals manufactured from PTFE compounds have excellent resistance to high pressures, both high and cryogenic temperatures, and corrosive media with pH above 4 and below 12.5. With self-lubricating characteristics, PTFE has become the singular solution for applications requiring low coefficients of friction, low break-out forces, and no stick-slip. Additionally, they have excellent electrical properties and unlimited shelf life. PTFE often combines with fillers that enhance the physical properties of the compound. Common filler includes, carbon fibre, glass fibre, bronze, graphite, Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and carbon-graphite. Typical applications for PTFE material include FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading), cryogenic valves, LNG rotary joints, nozzles and receptacles, large-scale servo hydraulic cylinders, API 6A & API 6D wellhead equipment, CNC machines, oil-free air compressors, motion control and robotic dispensing equipment, extreme high-pressure waterjet cutting, and vehicle equipment.

More technical sealing solutions require improved sealing knowledge and capabilities. The best sealing solutions not only makes selecting the correct sealing materials critical but necessitates the latest in manufacturing capabilities as well. Consequently, Parjet has made this a priority and invested enormous capital in developing the best and most efficient manufacturing capabilities in the industry. Manufacturers now have a supplier to rely on for the best seal products to solve the most difficult applications without causing an undue financial burden.
