With over 30 years of experience in the sealing industry, Parjet has extensive knowledge of the various spring types available in the industry. With our plant in Taiwan, we manufacture and provide a wide range of springs—including Canted Coil Springs, Helical Springs, and Cantilever Springs. These springs can be used in many different aspects, from acting as a spring energizer for seal applications to performing electromagnetic interference shielding functions and even serve for electrical conductivity purposes. All springs can be customized in different sizes, materials, length, and plating based on the needs. This article is going to share some important insights on Canted Coil Spring, Helical Spring and Cantilever Spring.
What is Cantilever Spring?
Cantilever spring is V shaped pattern design spring that provide equal linear spring load over a large deflection range. The V shape design stretches the seal jacket during the sealing operation that helps the spring energized seal to seal tightly.
What is Helical Spring?
Helical spring is the composition of wounded flat ribbon metal with round cross section, typically in stainless steel and other alloy material. The Helical spring load spread along the individual band that helps the spring to have a relatively high spring load with smaller deflection range.
What is Canted Coil Spring?
Canted Coil Spring, also known as Slanted Coil Spring, has a unique oval shape cross section that allows the spring to have a very flat spring force curve in a specific working deflection range. The unique design of the Canted Coil Spring helps to compensate the unevenness of the mating surfaces.
What are Canted Coil Springs, Helical Springs and Cantilever Spring used for?
Spring Energized Seal:
Canted Coil Spring, Helical spring and Cantilever spring are commonly used in spring energized seal (HiPerSeal®). Since each of the spring has its own special design and provides different load and function, they are preferred in different operating conditions. For example, Spring energized seals with cantilever spring are preferred with reciprocating radial and face sealing with medium pressure environment. Spring energized seals with Helical Springs are commonly used in medium to high load application under static sealing application. Spring energized seal with Canted Coil Spring, on the other hand, are suitable for friction sensitive application under rotary moderate speed application. Electric power transfer:
An interesting fact on Helical Spring and Canted Coil Spring is that they can be used on its own for other non-spring energizing purposes. One of the special functions for Helical spring and Canted Coil Spring is their electricity conductivity ability. Helical Springs and Canted Coil Springs are excellent choices for electric conductivity applications. Since Helical Spring has a high spring load, it stays in shape even with rectangular groove. As for Canted Coil Spring, the form of the spring allows it to have multiple points of contact which contribute to consistent conductivity even on uneven surfaces. The material, dimension, spring force and plating of the springs are the keys to electric power transfer. Helical Springs and Canted Coil Springs has been widely used in automotive, semiconductor, energy, aerospace industry.
EMI Shielding:
Another outstanding function that both Canted Coil Springs and Helical Springs has is EMI/RFI shielding. Their electric conductivity mentioned earlier helps the spring to achieve shielding purposes for certain ranges of EMI. Helical spring and Canted Coil Springs can protect your devices from harmful EMI and RFI even under poor conditions such as shock and vibration. Helical and Canted Coil Springs have multiple contact points which provide consistent conductivity to achieve the superior EMI/RFI shielding performance. It is an excellent option to reduce maintenance costs and design complexity while achieving EMI/RFI shielding performance. Helical Spring can remain in spiral shape even with sharper corners. Canted Coil spring can ensure stable contact with the hardware even under uneven surfaces.
Mechanical Properties:
Unlike Cantilever spring and Helical Spring, the Canted Coil spring has one unique mechanical function. Canted Coil Springs provide a solution for complex mechanical fastening applications. With the unique spring characteristics, the canted coil spring has fascinating mechanical capabilities: Locking, Latching and Holding. Based on the required spring force and application, Canted Coil Spring can be customized the wire diameter, width, and height of the spring.
- • Locking: to indefinitely secure two components together without breaking or damaging the parts.
- • Latching: to temporary secure two components together and allow multiple removal and insertion cycles.
- • Holding: to clutch and align tow components together through the control of the spring force.
Summary:
- • Cantilever spring is commonly used for spring energizing purposes.
- • Helical spring is commonly used for spring energizing purposes, EMI shielding functions, Electricity conductivity purposes.
- • Canted Coil spring is commonly used for spring energizing purposes, EMI shielding functions, Electricity conductivity purposes and mechanical fastening, such as locking, latching, and holding.
