Applications for Spring Energized Seals
What are Spring Energized Seals?
Spring Energized Seals are U shaped machines performance polymer, mostly polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE that uses springs as energizer to provide force for the sealing lips. The material of the seal jacket helps to enhance spring seal life and wear resistance properties. The spring energizers comes in different forms which are available in corrosion resistant metal alloy such as stainless steel, Elgiloy® and Hastelloy® to meet with extreme environments. Parjet offers Cantilever Springs, Helical Springs and Canted Coil Springs, for more details please visit here.
Applications of Spring Energized Seals:
Industry: General Industry
Challenge: A car washing machine manufacturer required a sealing design that prevents the malfunction of the machine caused by pollutants and rush under rotary application. The equipment uses water pressure to activate the sprinkler disc that allows it to rotate around the car. Initially there were no seals used in the equipment however, the disc was filled with pollutants and rust causing its inability to rotate after a certain period.
Operating condition:
Speed: Around 300 RPM
Temperature: 20°C to 30°C
Dynamic: Rotary
Pressure: 5 bar
Media: Water
Solution:
Parjet offered Spring Energized Seal – VD Type with UPE material. Type VD are rotary seals with Cantilever Spring (V springs) that can provide sealing under rotating applications. UHMW-PE has outstanding wear resistance, good oxidation resistance and excellent sealing function under low pressure application.
Industry: Robotic Arm
Challenge: One of our clients required a sealing design that can prevent the lubricating oil from leaking under a reciprocating dynamic environment in a six-axis robotic arm. The client originally used rubber seals from other suppliers, but because of its material properties such as, friction, stickiness and its occurrence of dust powder, the seals were unable to seal completely, resulting leakage.
Operating condition:
Speed: Around 4000RPM max.
Temperature: 80°C
Dynamic: Reciprocating
Pressure: Close to 0
Media: Liquid lubricating oil
Solution:
Parjet offered HiPerSeal Type CC with 10T material, which is spring energized seal with canted coil spring energizer and PTFE + 15% Glass fiber + 5% MOS2 material seal jacket. Thanks to the tough characteristics of glass fiber, the occurrence of dust powder and deformation has reduced. Moreover, with the choice of PTFE material which has low coefficient of friction and self-lubrication capability, our design has successfully prevented the leakage of liquid lubricating oil.
Industry: Cryogenic Valve
Challenge: Parjet was asked to develop a sealing component that can prevent leakage in a ball valve with cryogenic environment. The government strictly regulates that there should be no leakage of the LNG therefore a seal that can withstand cryogenic temperature with long sealing life expectancy is required.
Operating condition:
Temperature: -196°C
Dynamic: Static
Pressure: 150 bar max.
Media: LNG Liquid Nitrogen Gas
Solution:
Parjet offered HiPerSeal Type HP with 01TM material, which is spring energized seal with helical spring energizer - material Elgiloy to withstand extreme environment. Double helical springs were used for additional support to withstand the pressure and temperature.
Industry: Semiconductor
Challenge: Many semiconductor companies require a sealing component in their dispenser that can withstand an extremely high speed. Most of these equipments handles high-end products, so the malfunction of sealing device can easily cause damages that are worth thousands of dollars.
Operating condition:
Speed: 1500 Hz
Temperature: 6°C - 80°C
Dynamic: Reciprocating
Pressure: close to 0
Media: Glue
Solution:
Parjet offered HiPerSeal® Type VR with material GPE, which is spring energized seal with cantilever spring. The design and material choice of the seal allow the seal to withstand an extreme high speed and ensures the operation runs smoothly.
Spring Energized Seal (HiPerSeal®) can be used across a wide range of industries. It can withstand cryogenic temperature, high pressure and corrosive media. If you like to make any inquiries, contact us here. Our engineering team would be happy to assist.
