What is Teflon sealing material?
Teflon sealing material refers to seals made from Teflon which is the brand name for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). PTFE is a high-performance synthetic fluoropolymer known for its unique properties. The material is suitable for a wide range of applications, including sealing, non-stick cooking equipment...etc. Here are some key characteristics and uses of Teflon sealing material:
Key Characteristics:
- Chemical Resistance: PTFE is highly resistant to chemicals and acidic media, which makes the material ideal for sealing applications in chemically aggressive environments.
- High Temperature Tolerance: Teflon can withstand a wide range of temperatures, from -200°C to +260°C (-328°F to +500°F) which helps it to outperform traditional rubber seals under high-temperature or cryogenic applications.
- Low Friction: PTFE has a very low coefficient of friction, which helps to reduce wear and extend sealing life expectancy.
- Non-Stick Properties: Its non-stick nature prevents materials from adhering to the seal, this allows the seal to perform under poor lubricated environment and reduce the risk of contamination.
- Electrical Insulation: PTFE is an excellent electrical insulator, adding to its versatility in various industrial applications.
Uses:
- • Industrial Seals and Gaskets: Used in piping systems, reactors, and other industrial equipment where chemical resistance and temperature tolerance are crucial.
- • Aerospace and Automotive: Used for sealing engines and fuel systems due to its durability and ability to withstand harsh conditions.
- • Food and Beverage Industry: PTFE is safe to use in food processing equipment due to its non-toxicity and ease of cleaning. The material is also approved by FDA.
- • Pharmaceuticals: Widely used in pharmaceutical manufacturing as it has an excellent resistance to abrasive media.
- • Electronics: Used in components requiring insulation and resistance to high temperatures.
Types of Teflon Seals offered by Parjet:
- • Spring Energized Seals: PTFE seal jacket with spring energizer (canted Coil springs, cantilever springs or helical springs). Commonly used in high pressure static and dynamic (reciprocating and rotary) sealings applications.
- • Rotary Lip Seals: Selection between Metal casing or O Ring on the OD. Commonly used in low-medium pressure and high speed rotary sealing applications.
- • PTFE Glide Ring set: PTFE seal with O Ring, as known as step seals or glyd ring. Commonly used in hydraulic cylinder for high pressure and low speed dynamic applications. They can withstand bidirectional pressure.
- • Bearing isolators: Used to protect the rolling bearings of rotary equipment. It can withstand very high speed with no pressure.
- • Others: Parjet also provide other PTFE customized products, such as PTFE balls, PTFE bushings...etc.
In summary, Teflon sealing materials are appreciated for their exceptional chemical resistance, non-stick properties, thermal stability, and low coefficient of friction allowing them to be widely used in industrial, automotive, aerospace, food, and pharmaceutical…etc. applications.
